Who are Medical Laboratory Professionals?

Medical laboratory professionals are key members of the health workforce. They are responsible for testing of biomarkers in human samples from a variety of anatomical sources, the results of which aid in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and efforts to monitor health and engage in prevention. Work safety challenges for this population include work-related factors that can lead to burnout and personnel turnover.

Medical laboratory professionals go by many names depending on their training and work title, and are sometimes called Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Technologists and Laboratory Technicians.

A survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported approximately 343,000 people worked as medical laboratory professionals with almost half working at general medical and surgical hospitals.

Education and Training

Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientists (CLS/MLS) have a bachelor’s degree and perform complicated, specialized tests and provide quality supervision. Clinical Laboratory Technicians (CLT/MLT) usually have an associate degree and focus on routine, automated testing, instrument maintenance, and sample processing. 

Certification through ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology): Often considered the “gold standard” for both MLS and MLT certifications.

Certification through AMT (American Medical Technologists): Provides certification for medical laboratory professionals, often viewed as a “working tech” credential.

Specialists: A specialized certification offered by the ASCP BOC for advanced roles in hematology, microbiology, chemistry and blood banking.

Skills and Qualities Needed
Attention to detail: Critical for accurate sample analysis and documentation.
Critical thinking: Essential for troubleshooting, validating, and interpreting data.
Technical skills with laboratory instruments: Skilled in using laboratory instruments (e.g., microscopes, automated analyzers).  
Ability to follow safety protocols: Competent in safety standards for handling biohazardous materials.  
Communication and teamwork: Effective teamwork with colleagues and communication of results to the medical staff.

Responsibilities and Career Outlook

Types of Tests they Perform:

Blood analysis: (Hematology and Coagulation) Scientists study blood cells and clotting factors to diagnose conditions such as anemia, leukemia, and infections.
Microbiology tests: Identify microorganisms responsible for infections.
Urinalysis: Performs physical, chemical, and microscopic examination of urine.
Genetic or molecular tests: Use technology like PCR to detect disease at the DNA/RNA level.
Specialized testing: depends on the workplace including Histocompatibility/HLA (transplant matching), Flow Cytometry (leukemia/lymphoma identification), and Toxicology.

Level of autonomy: Scientists have higher decision-making authority and translate results, while technicians work under the supervision of a scientist or manager.
Complexity of tests: Scientists handle complicated, manual, and diagnostic tests (e.g., molecular diagnostics), while technicians focus on routine, automated testing (e.g., automated blood counts).
Supervision roles: Scientists often supervise technicians, verify their work, and manage quality assurance.

Job demand and stability: There is high demand for these professionals, with many facilities experiencing shortages, resulting in strong job stability.
Opportunities for advancement (e.g., lab management, specialty certification, education roles): Lab management: Advancement to Laboratory Manager, Supervision, or Director.

Education/Administration: Training for future laboratory professionals or managing laboratory information systems.

Overview of their role in Healthcare

MLT are professionals who carry out many of the day-to-day tasks. They are often trained in using specific laboratory equipment or software. The role of an MLT has a practical focus in performing diagnostic testing on patient samples. They utilize their technical skills to operate equipment and carry out diagnostic testing. Other responsibilities include analyzing blood and body fluids, running quality control tests, operating and maintaining lab analyzers, and reporting results in laboratory information systems.

CLS/MLS play a complementary role in MLTs in a medical lab, but usually hold more responsibility for the vision and objectives behind the lab. They often focus on lab management while allowing MLT to handle implementation. Responsibilities and duties include examining and analyzing blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells, reporting test results to physicians, and utilizing microscopes, cell counters, and other high-precision lab equipment.

Where Do They Work?
Hospital-based clinical labs.
Public health labs at State or Local health departments.
Research labs such as pharmaceutical, biotech, and research institutions.
Private diagnostic companies, which are large, commercial diagnostic labs (e.g., Quest Diagnostics & LabCorp)
Blood banks including donor centers and transfusion services.
Physician offices, usually small on-site laboratories.

Occupational Health and Safety Concerns and Opportunities

Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientists (CLS/MLS) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) face several primary occupational health and safety concerns. One of the most significant is exposure to biological hazards, including infectious diseases transmitted through blood, aerosols, and needlestick injuries, especially when handling samples with unknown risks. They are also at risk of chemical exposure from hazardous elements like formaldehyde and solvents, which can cause both short- and long-term health effects. In addition, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are highly widespread, affecting up to 40-60% or workers, due to repetitive tasks and poor human engineering.

Another major concern is psychosocial stress and burnout, driven by high workloads, staffing shortages, and pressure for accuracy, with mental health problems reaching essential levels in some labs. Lastly, physical hazards such as cuts, spills, and equipment-related injuries contribute to overall workplace risk. Overall, these combined risks emphasize the need for stronger safety protocols, workplace modifications, and better mental health support.

CLS/MLS and MLT directly supports patient diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention. Although they often work behind the scenes, their skill in performing and interpreting laboratory tests ensures that providers have precise, timely information to make difficult medical decisions. Their role is particularly important given that the majority of healthcare decisions, estimated at 60-70%, depend on laboratory results. From detecting infections and chronic diseases to supporting public health efforts and outbreak responses, these professionals form the foundation of modern diagnostic medicine.

In summary, CLS/MLS and MLT professionals are necessary for the healthcare system. Their accuracy, technical skills, and commitment to quality care make them significant contributors to patient outcomes and overall public health.
